The Christine Spero Group

The arrangements are hip, the vocals are beautiful, the musicianship is stellar.

Currently, The Christine Spero Group is performing Spero Plays Nyro, A Celebration of the Music of Laura Nyro.

The late Laura Nyro is the songwriter behind such timeless music as Blood, Sweat, and Tears on "And When I Die". Another that you are sure to remember is "Eli's Comin'" as performed by Three Dog Night. But if we look deeper we learn that both of these super groups plus another, The Fifth Dimension ("Stoned Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Sweet Blindness") and most certainly the fabulous Barbra Streisand ("Stoney End") were all bringing us the music of a songwriter named Laura Nyro. Today Laura is far from being forgotten as the multi-talented group, The Christine Spero Group, performs their live tribute that pays incredible homage to Ms. Nyro.

In their heartfelt and moving tribute to Laura Nyro singer/songwriter and pianist Christine Spero and her group take the listener on an unforgettable journey through some of Laura's most memorable songs. Spero Plays Nyro reminds us that Laura's music is poignant and timeless. The exquisite arrangements are true to Laura's originals but with many sweet creative touches, beautifully interpreted in the group's own distinct style. Christine has fully recaptured Laura's spirit and passion with beautiful renditions running the breadth and depth of Laura's emotions.

Drummer Peter O'Brien and bassist Scott Petito create a rhythm section that keeps the music driving and steady but never imposing. Saxophonist/percussionist, Elliot Spero, adds excellent sax solos, flutes and multiple percussion accents. Also available as openers or as part of the show, Steve Katz, a good friend of Laura's and a founding member of Blood, Sweat and Tears and/or John Sebastian from the Lovin' Spoonful who played on Laura's later albums.

Even before Christine Spero began recording with her dynamic quartet, she was earning numerous accolades for her melodic, emotionally powerful and soulful songwriting and was Winner of the USA Songwriting Competition/Jazz category with her song "He Wasn't Always That Way". Her eclectic and personal style of composing was influenced by many classical and jazz musicians. She has performed with her own quartets and sextets over the years and now lives in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where she continues to write, record, and perform with her band.

"This woman has a lover's touch on piano, a jazz master's vocabulary and a vocal splendor perfectly matched by a band that is nothing short of breathtaking"

- The Saratogian, Troy Record
