The Matchstick Architects

indie Rock, alt-Country

The Matchstick Architects are a New England based indie rock/alt-country band coming together from around the Northeast. The band puts forth a soulful blend of indie rock, country, folk, and Americana based music, influenced from an eclectic mix of artists ranging from songstresses such as Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann to purveyors of the American indie scene such as The Decemberists.

The band is fronted by Dar Maloney on guitar and lead vocals. Her hard-driving vocal style is often compared to that of Melissa Etheridge - and although she clearly has her own style, it's something she takes as a true compliment.

The Matchstick Architects play in and around New England and beyond in support of their debut album entitled... All That's In Between. The band is busy writing new music and is looking forward to recording its second full album, which promises to be a worthy follow-up to their debut effort.

Dar Maloney and Tom Conklin formed The Matchstick Architects as a duo in 2010. With the idea of adding bandmates always a persistent desire, they played small venues and festivals for a couple of years and continued to write songs. Bassist DiDi Davis came along shortly thereafter. That was a stroke of luck. She was the perfect fit and she added the pulsating low end that they were desperately missing.

From there, a search for the right drummer began. That search would prove to be a challenge. After going through several drummers that didn't work out for one reason or another, they found Paul Unsworth. Paul was the final piece to finishing the band's debut album. Over his professional career, Paul has played with legendary ex-Rolling Stones guitarist, Mick Taylor, and the legendary Ronnie Spector. Paul played drums on all the album tracks except for one - the soulful blues rocker, Ready. Band friend and Arlo Guthrie drummer, Terry A La Berry, had already laid down the drum tracks for that one.

Paul Unsworth relocated his family and had to leave the band in 2015, once again leaving a hole in the line-up that has been hard to keep filled. Dave Willey entered the picture shortly thereafter and remained with the band until the fall of 2017.

In March of 2018, Dennis Cotton agreed to come on board as the band's permanent drummer. Dennis played and toured with the legendary, British blues band Savoy Brown from 1999 to 2007. Now, he brings his world-class chops, experience, and musical sensibilities to The Matchstick Architects. On top of being an amazing drummer, Dennis is a perfect personality fit and a long sought-after breath of fresh air.

The Matchstick Architects have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to be on the same ticket as some incredible acts. In August of 2017, the band got to play at the Hudson Summerfest in Hudson, NY in support of the legendary NRBQ. In September of 2017, they played at the Birds of a Feather Music and Nature Festival in Grafton, NY in support of singer/songwriter, Sean Rowe.

"The Matchstick Architects...had the room tapping along to their contagious energy."
